CHAPTER THREE

“Oh my God,” Nate cries out.

Billy lifts his head from the mattress, expecting to see something awful. Did Nate find a bug in the bathroom? A text from John that’s horrible? But instead, Nate walks back into the bedroom holding one of the awful sweaters he gave Billy.

“Have you been wearing this?”

Billy laughs. “Yes! It’s warm. And it smells like you.”

“Sexy. But I think it smells more like you now. Should I take it back and make it smell like me again?”

Billy wants to cry out yes, but he pushes the sudden and sentimental response away. “Nah. We’re not going to create a brotherhood of the traveling hideous sweaters that way. I want no part in it.”

“All right. Fine. But I’m glad you’re wearing them.” Nate sits back on the bed, folding the sweater before he lies down next to Billy again. They kiss, but don’t linger too long. They’re both in boxers again, but Billy knows he’ll have to get dressed soon. They’ll be too cold otherwise.

When they pull apart, they move to reassemble their clothing without discussing it. As Nate fixes his collar, his eyes wander back out into the living area.

“I know,” Billy says. “We still gotta finish the cookies.”

“Yes, there’s that. But I was thinking about the bed. I’m wondering how to rearrange your furniture…” Nate trails off, spouting off a few more ideas about placement that Billy likes. When they’re done brainstorming, Billy wraps his hand around Nate’s.

“You’re really okay with this?”

“Yes. I don’t want you to be alone on Christmas. That was my only worry. So you’ll have your dad, and I’ll stop in.”

“You will?” Billy had somehow thought that this was all or nothing. Either they’d both be at his sister’s place, or they wouldn’t be together at all. No in-betweens.

Nate squeezes his hand. “Of course. I told you—I will get pretty sick of Christmas by at least noon. So I’ll grab some food, and make the drive back.”

“Thank you.” Billy kisses Nate again. He wants to fuck him again, too, but he knows they’re both tired. And they still need to clean up. So after the kiss is over, and Billy’s wearing something warmer, he gets up and starts to pack away what has already been baked, and finish what still needs to be done, while Nate rearranges the furniture. By the time the night is over, there’s only a small ball of dough left, the kind that can’t be made into any shape at all, and Nate’s vacuumed the apartment.

“I’m tempted to mop in here too, or to clean the walls,” Nate adds, “but I think I’m at my limits for the night.”

“You’ve already done so much more than I ever thought of doing, so thank you. Seriously.”

Nate smiles, muttering a few “no problems” and “not at alls” under his breath before he steps into the kitchen. He eyes the Tupperware containers full of cookies eagerly, then points at the stray ball of dough. “What’s this?”

“Oh. Nothing. I can’t make anything with it.
